''Psalms of Zeelandia''
This program is dedicated to the psalms that were once taught by the Dutch missionaries in Taiwan, highlighting the
Formosaanse Taal of Siraya, a language that in later centuries became extinct but was resurrected with the help of the
missionaries’ documents preserved in Dutch archives. Stories from the historical fiction “Niet Zonder Tranen" (Tears of
Zeelandia. Pieter Winsemius, Prometeus 2016) will be told by a narrator, giving accounts of the life and work of a young
Dutch minister in Taiwan. Siraya psalm texts, preserved in 17th century sources, will be presented alongside Siraya
translations made by today’s speakers of Siraya. The psalms will be sung to arrangements by Dutch 17th century lutenist
Vallet. Psalm variations by Sweelinck, Van Noordt and Van Eyck will be performed on the organ and the recorder. This
program truly commemorates the connection between the histories of the two lands.
